Gienia will be remembered as a brave woman of unwavering faith and extraordinary strength. As a child growing up in Poland, she survived the devastation of war, endured hunger, and suffered loss. She lived through the occupation of her beloved hometown of Goniądz during the war, and carried the sorrow of losing her 19 year old brother. These early hardships shaped a woman of resilience, courage, and deep compassion for others.
In the 1970s, Gienia arrived in Canada for the first time, and fell in love with her future home. Her dream came true in 1986 when the rest of Gienia’s family joined her. Gienia embraced her new life with gratitude and enthusiasm. She opened the door to Canada and sponsored many families and friends. She helped them as they settled in, guiding them with generosity, wisdom, and practical help; because of her and her late husband Jerzy, generations have flourished, and today, a large and loving extended family and friends stand as a living testament to Gienia’s generosity, faith, and love. She believed life was too precious not to celebrate, and she and Jerzy accepted every invitation and every occasion with joy. It was their motto: life is meant to be lived together and celebrated fully.
Gienia was known for her boundless hospitality, not only toward her family, friends, and neighbours, but toward anyone in need. Her doors were always open, and food ready to serve at her table. She encouraged those around her to eat well, be joyful, and stay close to one another. Her love was expressed through warm hugs that made everyone feel safe and deeply cherished.
Throughout her life, Gienia worked tirelessly and carried within her a spirit of profound faith and devotion to God. Through her initiative and determination, signatures were collected to establish a Polish-language Mass at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. She volunteered countless hours with the Women’s Auxiliary, helping organize charitable events, making pierogi, and preparing traditional Polish meals, always giving generously of her time and energy.
Gienia’s faith sustained her throughout her life. Until her final days, she wore or carried her Rosary, and her small Polish prayer book, Miłość do Różańca (Love for the Rosary), was always beside her. At the retirement residence, she could be heard singing the “Koronka” and praying the Rosary in Polish along the hallways, her voice bringing comfort to fellow residents.
She encouraged her children and grandchildren to be brave, to pursue education, and to care for their health. Gardening and growing vegetables were among her great passions. She loved flowers and always made room for them in her windows. She was deeply proud of her Polish roots and her hometown of Goniądz, where she spent many summers hosting her grandchildren and family, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
She made pilgrimages to Częstochowa, Licheń, Wilno, Rome, and other holy places, where she prayed with deep devotion. She was a proud supporter of “Radio Maryja.” One of her final remarks reflected Gienia’s Catholic values and was a compass by which she lived: “Is she a Christian? Will she help?”
Rest in peace, Gieniu. We will carry your love with us always.
Please keep Gienia in your prayers.
