In Celebration of

Gary Scheichl

November 1, 1943 -  June 22, 2022

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gerald (Gary) Scheichl on June 22, 2022. Surrounded by family and close friends who sincerely hoped they could rouse him for his tee time, Gary has moved on to greener pastures, much to our dismay.

Born in Steyr, Austria on November 1st, 1943 - All Saint’s day nonetheless! - A young Gary shared stories of life that wasn’t always so saintly … as an alter boy (drinking the wine!)… buying ice creams on church outings and selling them for 25 schillings more (already a business man!)… and taking on his friend’s dares (goldfish, pies and ice cream sundaes were swallowed!). Anyone who knows him well would agree that despite his mischief as a young man, he was the most honest, loyal, and true friend one could ask for.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sieglinde (aka “Schatze”) and his children Stefan (Dina), Melissa (Scott), and Grandchildren Andrew (his doppelgänger) & Kate (“Poopsie”). Of all his loyal family members, no one will miss him more than his trusty canine side-kick Spike.

Gary will be missed as a husband, father, Opa, brother, friend, business leader, fishing boat captain, poker star, whip-cream and donut connoisseur.

Creator of the best personalized birthday cards ever, famous for his humorous poems and inspiring notes to co-workers and friends alike & King of the retirement roast…. His creativity, humour and wit were the highlight of most social events, with everyone looking forward to hearing Gary’s Speech.

We know that his friends and loved ones are shocked at this news - Gary was a formidable man, always full of life and energy. It’s hard to imagine him not beating the odds and outliving us all!

A Visitation is being held at Turner & Porter (1981 Dundas St. West, Mississauga) on Thursday, June 30th anytime between 4:00-8:00 pm to meet with the family and pay your respects.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Trillium Health Partners - Cardiac ICU would be welcomed in Gary’s honour. His family is very grateful to Dr. Cutrara, Dr. Connor, Andrew S., and the rest of the Cardiac ICU team who did everything they could for him.

Amongst the many attributes that come to mind when you think of Gary Scheichl, his greatest legacy is likely how he lived his life to the fullest and how he was thought of by everyone who knew him.

How lucky he was to be the kind of man that makes saying goodbye so hard. We Love You, now & forever!

Rest In Peace Dad.

Gary and I grew up together in Steyr, Austria. In 1965 we were at one of our favourite hang outs when he mentioned that he was considering immigrating to Canada. I joined him and this decision changed both of our lives.
Gary is and will be my best friend and all the memories of our friendship will remain forever. If there is such a thing as life after passing, perhaps we can make up for our lost time.

Gary, I miss you. RIP

Your friend,
Dieter

My dad and I were very close and fortunate to spend many years together sharing our common love of sports and fishing. Although he was my father, we were often mistaken for brothers (which made him happy) because of his abundant, youthful energy and appearance!
Even though he always demonstrated & instilled a work ethic that has made our work lives very busy, he also passed on the message & desire to live life to the fullest, which I will continue to do in his memory. He conveyed this message by often including me in his adventures and supporting me in mine. I was fortunate to have spent a lot of time with him, travelling and at home (especially in the last 30 years) doing what we love, talking about life and exchanging the wisdom that comes with living it.

He loved my mom, Sigi, his daughter Melissa and her two children, my nephew Andrew and my niece Kate, his grandchildren. I would be remiss in not mentioning Spike (Fritz), his beloved dog who may have been his favorite and Spike certainly felt the same way!

The best thing about Gary, is that it almost doesn’t matter who you talk to: family, friends, co-workers…He was everybody’s favorite!

Now that is a life story that we should all hope for!

My father did not wish for an elaborate funeral service or burial. He wished to be cremated and remembered which I hope you will do.

Many friends have already expressed their sadness at my loss; I thank them…but, I want you all to know you should be expressing your joy that I have been so blessed and lucky to have had a dad like Gary!

With love,
Stefan
