Gary and I go back to the inception of performance rallying in Ontario (and Canada). We both drove Datsun 510's. Gary's forte was going fast. mine was testing a 510's abilities to do either end over end rolls or side rolls. Even though we ran many times against each other, i particularly remember the Forest Rally in the Calabogie area in the 1970's. Performance rallying was just making it's mark. Gary beat me that day, in a small part because he had a faster car but in a much larger part because he was simply the better driver. What makes that day notable was that behind both of us were two future Canadian champions. That made my day and I'm sure it made his. Gary had a very competitive 2017 year and i'm going to miss him in 2018. Race in peace friend.

I am sorry to hear of Gary's passing. I will remember him fondly as he was one of the 'old timers' that I could never quite beat when we competed at the same rallies, I think he quite enjoyed putting us young guys in his place! He was a great competitor and volunteer to the sport.

My condolences,
John Vanos
