In Celebration of

Frederick Babbie

November 20, 1940 -  November 3, 2021

Fred Babbie passed away peacefully at Toronto Western Hospital with his family at his side on Wednesday November 3rd in his 80th year.

Born and raised in Toronto, he attended Humberside Collegiate (’58) and University of Toronto, Engineering (’62) and MBA York University (’69). He loved being active, rowing being a particular passion. He always approached life with grit and determination. Fred enjoyed a long career in the Health Care field in many capacities retiring in 2013 from Complete Purchasing Services (ARAMARK). He served on many boards over the years but was most inspired by the work he did for the Ukrainian Care Centre. Fred met his wife Marika in 1967 and they just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on November 1st. Fred was an avid traveler experiencing the world and his zest for life with his wife, children and friends. He was most at home gazing out on the lake or raking leaves at the cottage at Eight Mile Point on Lake Simcoe. A devoted husband, father and grandfather and friend to many; Fred loved to spend time watching his grandkids at the cottage. He was predeceased by his parents Fred Babbie and Paulina Prestyko. He will be missed by his wife Marika (nee Kowal); his children Fred Babbie Jr (Marlena) , Lara Babbie , Michael Babbie (Julie); his grandchildren Mason, Emma, Sophia and Zayn and his sister Lynda (Doug) and niece Tara. He spent his days looking for knowledge and could always be counted on for a great conversation. Until the next time we talk.

We are thankful for the great nurses, doctors and support staff at Toronto Western Hospital for their care until the end.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Ukrainian Care Centre, in his honor (http://www.stdemetrius.ca/donate).

I am very, very distressed to learn of the passing of our favourite, "Bionic Man." Fred was a wonderful guy whom all of our group enjoyed as he was always happy and upbeat no matter what was going on regarding his health.

Never had I known anyone who had had more serious health issues and was always so positive and ready to go with the rest of the group with a huge smile on his face.

On On, Bionic man and farewell until we see you at the next HHHH run in Heaven.

Thank you for always making us laugh Mr. Babbie. You were an amazing friend and Father to Lara and I will always be envious of your unbelievable “father/daughter” trips together. I feel very lucky to have known you. You will be greatly missed!

So sorry to hear of Fred’s passing…we talked and saw each other every year since we met in 1958, either in Toronto, Florida, Montreal, Edmonton or at our cottage or his on Lake Simcoe.
Fred was called “Uncle Fred” by our 3 children and our extended family loved him.
We both attended special occasions for each other’s family.
Grace and I will miss him dearly.
Our thoughts are with Marika, Fred Jr., Marlena, Michael, Julie and Lara.
Dave and Grace Aplin and family.
