In Celebration of

Fred Buchal

November 28, 1937 -  November 6, 2022

Fred Buchal died peacefully with his family by his side, at Credit Valley Hospital, on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Catharine. Devoted father of Liza (Glenn), Laura, Jamie (Kathleen), and the late Francine. Adored grandfather of Jessica, Emily- Anne, Tyler, Morgan, Thomas, Carsen, and Sutton and great-grandfather to Madelyn, Hannah, Rowan, and Kyla.

Predeceased by his father (Franz), mother (Emma), brother (Franz), and sister (Maria).

Fred immigrated to Canada from Germany at the age of 14 with his family. He saw his new home as a place of endless possibilities, dreams, and of course adventures. Fred loved an adventure.

The early years in Fred’s new home were challenging for his family. At the age of 16, he left school to help support his family. Fred started at Massey Ferguson (Toronto) as a tool-and-die apprentice. His tenure with the company lasted 36 years. During this time, Fred worked his way up the company holding many different Management positions until the company closed in the late 1980s.

In Fred’s earlier years his adventurous spirit took him in many directions. From cars to boats to water and snow skiing to scuba diving and of course his time as a reservist in the 48th Highlanders in the Canadian Military. (Yes, there is a picture of him in his kilt!)

Fred’s true adventure started when he met and married Catharine, his one and only love of 62 years. Together they raised 3 children.

Fred always wanted his family to experience life through travel. Whether it was a planned family trip or you have one hour to pack type of trip, the adventure and sometimes misadventures are something the family will always remember and cherish.

As Fred’s family grew so did his involvement in his community. Just like with his kids, Fred found it important that every child had the opportunity to experience sports. He volunteered countless hours coaching hockey and then in a more active role within the Mississauga Hockey League as an Executive Board Member and several terms as League President. Volunteering was always important to Fred, something he instilled in his children.

As time passed, Fred’s greatest joy was watching his grandchildren grow. Whether it was attending ballet recitals, watching gymnastics, piano recitals, soccer games, and of course, hockey. Fred enjoyed seeing his grandchildren experience life, capturing every special moment through the lens of his camera, one of his passions.

Fred was a man of few words. When he talked you listened. Sometimes it was an encrypted life lesson that took time for the message to be realized. Other times it was a story of growing up and his adventures.

Fred left this world the only way he would have it, on his own terms. With his family by his side, he left knowing... “we good”.

The family invites friends and family to join us in a celebration of Fred’s life. Stories, memories, and laughter. No tears. Fred wouldn't like that.

The family would like to thank Peel Paramedics, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, Credit Valley Hospital Emergency, ICU, Cancer Care, and Palliative Care teams for the compassionate care for Fred and support to the family.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter ‘Neweduk’ Chapel, 1981 Dundas Street West, Mississauga), on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, from 6-9 p.m. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association of Canada or Credit Valley Hospital Cancer Centre.

Our families shared so many occasions growing up. Every major holiday, picnics on the weekend and just simple times in each other's homes.
I remember as a child betting Uncle Fred a dime that he couldn't eat just one Lays potato chip (advertising works!). Well, it turns out he could! I paid up. The next morning I woke up to find that he'd left the dime for behind for me. I know this doesn't sound like much of a story, but as an 8 year old, I was really touched. A simple exchange that's stayed in my heart all these years.
I hope that your own memories of times shared will give you comfort in the coming days.
Sending love and support.

Our deepest condolences. Fred was a great uncle and godfather. One of my favourite memories is from one of our family summer get-togethers at a lake when I was maybe 12 years old . Uncle Fred took me on a canoe ride around a little island. There are so many other fond memories. He will be greatly missed.
