January 16, 1938 – August 3, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Finley Ronald Joseph McCarney on August 3, 2025. Surrounded by love, Finley passed away after a long and courageous battle with Leukemia, fighting to the very end. He is together again with his forever yours, Penny.
Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, to Ted and Mary Kate McCarney, Finley was soon joined by his adored sister, Lynne Murphy (William Murphy). The family later moved to Montreal, where their home was a vibrant hub, welcoming aunts, uncles, and extended family. Eventually, the family settled in Toronto, and Finley attended De La Salle High School, playing drums in the Marching Band. He went on to pursue a career as a Chartered Public Accountant, becoming the first student to open an office for his firm, in Parry Sound. Finley's passion for supporting his clients, mentoring his team, and collaborating with his partners became a lifelong pursuit, leaving behind the legacy of McCarney Group LLP, a firm today known for its bright and caring team.
Finley met the love of his life, Penny Mitanis, on a blind date. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, service, family, travel, bridge, and adventures with dear friends. Penny's sister, Carole Hoffman (Roy Dotto), also became a cherished part of their lives, and they enjoyed trips around the world and visits in California together.
Finley and Penny welcomed four daughters: Carolynn McCarney-Perkins (Mick Perkins), Lisa McCarney (John Warus), Patti McCarney Grange (Jeffrey Grange), and Susan Marcus (Jon Marcus). Their 11 grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild brought immense joy (and noise!) to their lives. Finley lovingly passed on his passion for cards, golf, travel, and a touch of mischief to Justin, Matthew, Harry, and Aidan Grange; Benjamin, Adeleine, and Grace Perkins; Alyssa and Ryan, and son Lucas, Warus; and Lauren and Finley Marcus.
Finley was a true gentleman—determined, ambitious, and quietly supportive of his community. He was a pillar of his church, his firm, and his neighborhood. He was a founding member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and their ShareLife initiatives. With his sarcastic and dry sense of humor, he drew people to him and was deeply cherished by all who knew him. While he might have joked about the noise from too many people in his house, he wouldn't have had it any other way.
Beyond his accomplishments, Finley will be remembered as a man of faith & integrity, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. We will dearly miss his playful, mischievous sarcasm, his generous spirit, and his never-ending work ethic.
Finley was so grateful for the care he and Penny received from all the staff at Credit Valley Hospital and has a special place in his heart for the cancer care transfusion team.
Finley was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Mary Kate McCarney; his loving in-laws, John and Nora Matthews; and his brothers-in-law, Dr. Warren Hoffman and William Murphy and recently his wife, Penny.
He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
