In Celebration of

Evelyn Mishko (nee Morrice)

September 24, 1928 -  February 8, 2018

The Mishko family is profoundly saddened to announce Evelyn’s passing on February 8, 2018, at the age of 89. The lady who travelled each and every highway in her Corvette, listening to Frank Sinatra, had such a powerful presence, and will be deeply missed. Beloved wife of Walter for 62 years. Cherished mother of Laura (Jeff), Walter John (Anne), and adored grandma of Stephen and Natalie. Predeceased by her father Charles, her mother Dorothy, and siblings Dorothy, Jean, Bill and Jim. Much loved aunt to David (Charis), Judy (Den and daughter Michelle), Carol (Vickie), Dorothy (Keith), Maddy (Derek), the late Theo (Shelley) and Stephanie (Harold). She cherished dear friends — Carmie, Joan, Lois and the late Bev — who enriched her life.
Evelyn was a superb and accomplished athlete who made significant contributions to the world of synchronized swimming. With her duet partner and fellow Canadian champion, Bev Sutcliffe, and solo champion Joan Orser-Roberts, she demonstrated the sport at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. Their performances were instrumental in the eventual inclusion of synchro as an Olympic sport. During the Pan Am Games in 2015, Evelyn was recognized for her lifetime achievements in the sport. Evelyn, Bev and Joan celebrated the 50th anniversary of their Olympic contribution with a trip to Las Vegas to see Cirque du Soleil’s “O”.
In the years following the Olympics, Evelyn performed professionally in events across eastern Canada, including the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show and the CNE. In later years, she coached synchro at University of Toronto and enjoyed huge success competing at the Masters level well into her late 70s.
She enjoyed things grand and small — travel, dancing, anything gold, purses, diamonds, beautiful clothes, parties, good music, coconut shrimp, carrot cake, opera, Mary Tyler Moore, Elton John, correct grammar and pronunciation, and her son’s famous rum and coke. Evelyn (aka “Winkles”, “Vivi”, “Alvins”) would like to be remembered as the blonde bombshell, and for her elegant synchro double ballet legs. We will all never forget her gorgeous smile that could light up a room. The family would like to recognize dear friends and family who offered time, love, support, humour, cooking, baking and gentle care to Evelyn when she needed it most.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., (between Kipling & Islington Aves.) Etobicoke, on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 1 p.m. followed by entombment at the Park Lawn Paradise Mausoleum. The family is planning a Celebration of Life for a later date.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

I have many fun memories of swimming with Ev on the synchro master's team. I am currently in Florida and remember our team competing in the early 80's, at the Hall of Fame pool in Fort Lauderdale. I don't remember how well we did, just the great time we had with Ev leading the way with her infectious sense of humour.
My prayers are with Walter & the family
