Elma Alberta Howes (nee Hand)

November 13, 1920 - March 31, 2017

Peacefully, at Christie Gardens on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the age of 96. Beloved wife of Cyril. Loving mother of Graham (Hazel Walker) and Trevor (Sharlaine). Cherished grandmother of Kathryn (Mike), Lisa (Geoff), Jason (Christina), Nicholas (Lauren) and Kristopher. Great-grandmother of Addison, Matthew, Keira and Avery. Sister of the late Doris and Margaret, she will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews: Jane, Ainslie, Barbara, John, and Paul.

Born in Shelburne, Elma met Cyril at a YMCA dance in Toronto during WW II, then traveled to Britain in 1946 as a war bride. Returning by ship with two boys, they settled in Toronto in 1953. Friends may visit at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W. (between Islington and Kipling Ave’s) in Etobicoke, on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, from 6 - 9 p.m., and on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, from 10 a.m. until the time of Service at 11 a.m., in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers she would wish memorial donations be made to the Music Fund at St. James United Church, 400 Burnhamthorpe Rd, Toronto, or to Doctors Without Borders. Elma and Cyril were special friends and cousins to my mom Cora McCune.
I remember playing with Trevor at aunt Bert's many years ago!
She was a kind and gentle lady, and our family always enjoyed our visits from Elma and Cyril.

Elma and Cyril were frequent visitors to Meaford and Thornbury to visit our family. It was always a pleasure as so many stories were shared about "the old days", about family and about music. Believe this special lady is the last Hand of her generation. She's enjoyed a long and very happy journey.
