It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elio Giacomo Pighin, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, on February 18, 2026, at the age of 93.
Born in Orcenico, Italy, he grew up during the hardships of war. At 19, he left his homeland for Canada, carrying with him determination, resilience, and a strong work ethic that would guide him throughout his life.
He built a life defined by craftsmanship, curiosity, service, and quiet devotion to family. A highly skilled tile and marble craftsman, his artistry can be seen throughout Toronto in offices and towers that stand as lasting testaments to his skill.
Though his formal education ended at grade five, his pursuit of knowledge never ceased. He was endlessly curious about the world and determined to understand how things worked. He studied electronics and became a licensed HAM radio operator, connecting with voices and ideas far beyond his immediate surroundings. His interests ranged widely — philosophy, languages, science, and any subject he could explore through books or conversation. Learning was not simply a hobby for him; it was a lifelong joy.
He was also a gifted nature photographer, capturing moments of beauty with the same careful attention he brought to his craftsmanship. His love of nature was evident in the garden he tended so faithfully. There, he found peace among flowers and feeding the many birds and animals who visited him daily.
Of all his accomplishments, two roles brought him the greatest pride. First and foremost was being a grandfather. Nothing delighted him more than time spent with his grandchildren — sharing stories, wisdom, humor, and unconditional love. He took immense pride in each of them and found in their lives his greatest reward.
The second was his dedication to volunteering. Service to others was woven into the fabric of his life. He delivered Meals on Wheels until the remarkable age of 90. He also volunteered with Etobicoke Services for Seniors, The St James Food Basket, and many others organizations believing that helping others was simply what one should do.
He was a man of integrity, humility, and steady presence. He taught by example: that education is lifelong, that work should be done well, that nature is to be cherished, and that service to others is one of life’s highest callings.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Yolanda, his children: Terry-Ann (Dean), and Sandra (Paul); his beloved grandchildren: Luke (Shala), Cole (Felicia), Sabrina, Ava and Dylan and his devoted caregiver, Jane, who cared for him with extraordinary compassion and love.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Meals on Wheels or the Dorothy Ley Hospice.
