In Celebration of

Edith M. Grima Dame Cdr., OSJ (nee Porteous)

May 18, 1934 -  March 9, 2023

The Grima family is sorrowed to announce the passing of our matriarch: Edith passed away quietly in the early morning hours of March 9, 2023, in her home, at the age of 88.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, John, on March 29, 2020. John passed away at the age of 87. They had 67 years of devoted life and love to one another.

Together, they had their children, raised their large extended family, and lived their lives in the City of Toronto, punctuated with many trips to John's birthplace, Malta.

They were blessed with four children: John Jr., Victor (Louisa), Marie-Rose, and Georgina. Loving grandparents to: Karina (Darren), Adrienne (Jay), Stephanie (Adam), Lauren (Bronson), Evan (Daniel), Andrew (Tricia), and Johnathan (Kari). Beloved great-grandparents of: Courtney, Emily, Faith, Abigail, Annabelle, Madison, Jaidan, Myla, Leah, Elliott, Liam, Emmett, Connor, and Olivia. They are lovingly remembered by Edith's sister Betty Curnow (the late Robin), and John's brother Nick (the late Vera) of Windsor, Ontario, all the extended families, as well as many and dear friends. Predeceased by Edith's sisters Emily and Jessie.

Not only did she raise her own four children at home, Edith worked at the Salvation Army, Broadview Village Children's Home as a "House Mother". Her devotion and care is fondly remembered by many of those children, now adults, who have kept in touch over the years. Edith retired from the Ministry of Transportation.

For decades, both Edith and John gave their time and talents to several live community theater groups in East York; John directed, while Edith was his Girl Friday; making costumes, stage managing, script editing, production, and even acting once in a while.

She dedicated her life to the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, where she began as a Serving Sister, and rose to the rank of Dame Commander. Edith was also a former President of the Catholic Women’s League at Holy Cross Parish in Toronto.

When John passed away, the world was shut down in the early days of the Pandemic. To honour both of them, friends may call at the Turner & Porter Peel Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga (N. of QEW) on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 2-4 pm.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 291 Cosburn Ave., East York (at Donlands Ave.), on Friday, March 17, 2023, at 11 am.

Edith will be buried next to John at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, donations in both Edith and John's memory may be made to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation or the OSJ Charities Trust Fund, 2800 Highway 7 West, Suite 301, Concord ON, L4K 1W8.

Online condolences and donations may be made using this website.
