In Celebration of

Dr. Mary E. Horsey

November 27, 1932 -  July 2, 2018

Died on July 2, 2018 at her home in Kensington Gardens with family by her side. Mary will be lovingly remembered by her brother Herbert (Joan), niece Susan (Gianni) and nephew John (Joyce), and their children, Jacob (Jenny), Madeline (Jon), Hannah (Chris), and Reggie. She also leaves her great-great-niece Isobel and great-great-nephews Isaac and Charlie. Mary will be missed by dear friends Laura and Paddy, as well as friends in Canada and the U.K.

Mary was born in Montreal, Quebec to Richard and Ruth Horsey. She graduated from Montreal West High School, then studied music at McGill. She put herself through medical school at Queen's University, receiving her MD in 1963. She did a residency in psychiatry in Edmonton, then moved to London, England, where she had various jobs in the National Health Service and became a consultant in Psychiatry. She obtained the British R. C. Psych qualifications and also the Canadian Fellowship in Psychiatry. On her return to Canada, Mary settled in Barrie, where she had a private practice and was on the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital. She loved her work, and finally retired at the age of 80.

Mary inspired us with her determination and sense of adventure. She was a world traveler, a musician, a music-lover, a dear friend, and a loving sister and aunt. We’ll miss her.

The family wishes to thank all of those who contributed to Mary’s life, particularly in her last years. This includes the staff at Toronto Western Hospital, and the wonderful team at Kensington Gardens, where Mary lived in her last years. We are also grateful to Winny for her care.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto, at Windermere Ave., east of Jane subway, on Thursday, July 12, 2018 from 10 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service, held in the Chapel at 11 a.m.

I never knew Dr. Horsey very well, meeting her as a shy nursing student on the mental health inpatient department during consolidation at RVH in 1984. What an accomplished lady!
My condolences to the family.

Dr. Horsey was a great help to those of my patients who saw her for psychiatric care. She provided significant service to the Barrie community. My condolences to her friends and family.
