In Celebration of
Dr. Kenneth James Marland
August 23, 1921 -
October 13, 2022
Ken lived life with grace, love, joy, and readiness for the next adventure. Peacefully at home, Ken completed his last chapter of 101 remarkable years of living life well.
This gentle man was devoted to family, a true friend, a supportive colleague, a patient teacher and quietly served the community.
Ken was born the youngest child (brother to Ruth and Sydney) to immigrants Sydney, a railroad engineer, and Edith Marland, who ran a boarding house, on August 23, 1921, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. As a teenager Ken delivered newspapers and spent his summers living in a tent and renting fishing equipment to visitors to Lake Waskesiu.
When World War II began in 1939, recent high school graduate Ken joined the army as a volunteer in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps. After the war ended, Ken returned to Canada and enrolled in Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Graduating in 1953, Ken started Lorne Park Dental Associates in 1954. Ken built his professional life around service to generations of Lorne Park families to whom he provided dental care in his kind, gentle and caring way.
As a husband, he is a wonderful role model of support and love with the marriage to his beautiful bride Margaret Marland (née King) for almost 65 years. Together, as soulmates and companions, they built a strong family life and loving community of friends who became extended “family.” As a parent, his children (Jane (predeceased), Ruth, Donald, and Robert) know the depth of his love. As a grandfather, he cherished his seven grandchildren (Rebecca, Kate, Hilary, James, Annie, Valerie, and Molly).
When Ken finally retired from his dental practice, he focussed on his passions. His favourite place was the cottage, building, repairing, and puttering around. Ken’s enthusiasm for the outdoors extended to multiple sports, including downhill skiing until his late seventies and golfing until his mid-nineties. Throughout his life, Ken cherished the great friendships developed through these and other activities. Ken is known for being a generous man of service to his community as a Boy Scout leader, an active member of Rotary, and a founder of Probus Mississauga-South.
We celebrate Ken Marland’s legacy. 101 years of adventure and love does not end with his passing but lives on in the stories and adventures that he lived and created for us. We love you forever.
