In Celebration of

Dr. Edward A.J. Ryan MD, FRCSC, FSOGC

December 6, 1947 -  September 18, 2023

It is with extreme sadness that the family and very close friends of Dr. Edward (Ed) Ryan of Crediton Parkway, Mississauga announce his unexpected passing on Monday 18th September 2023 despite the best efforts and wonderful care of the ICU Medical team in Credit Valley Hospital Mississauga. Ed is survived by his sisters Geraldine (Kissane), Loreto (Hannon) and husband Pat, Clare Ryan and Johann Strobel all living in Ireland. Ed was predeceased by his father Martin Ryan and mother Anastasia Ryan in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Ed’s extended family includes 10 nephews and nieces and 14 grand nephews/nieces all of whom are very sad but very proud of their “Uncle Ed.”

Ed has lived in Mississauga/Toronto since 1975 embracing all that is good about Canadian Life and culture whilst always remaining a proud Irishman never forgetting his roots and maintaining contact with home. Having spent his early years in Nenagh until he was 12 Ed then attended boarding school in the Franciscan College Gormanstown Ireland from 1960 to 1965 where he excelled in many subjects particularly Science and Mathematics and also won national awards in college athletics. Ed studied medicine in University College Dublin from 1965 to 1971 graduating with honours and worked in The Mater Hospital Dublin for his internship year before heading to St. Louis Missouri USA in 1972 where he gained more experience in patient care and hospital practice typical of a very busy hospital in a big North American city. Subsequently, Ed moved to Toronto registering with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in June 1975. Further post graduate study resulted in Ed becoming a Gynaecologist/Obstetrician from January 1977. Ed was one of a very small number of IVF Pioneers in Canada and the U.S from the late seventies and remained so for most of the subsequent 45 years. He also was a member of the Dept. of OB/Gyn in the University of Toronto keen to continue his own learning and to pass on his own knowledge and experience to many medical students in the University.

Ed created and worked with a great team around him in the CReATe West Fertility Clinic in Etobicoke which has operated for over 20 years and is widely acknowledged as a centre of excellence specializing in helping women conceive children who had difficulty doing so prior to engaging with the clinic. There are many citizens of Toronto and Ontario and further afield who are here today because of how Ed and his team helped their mothers and fathers benefit from advances in medical science in the area of fertility medicine.

Ed loved his golf and was a member of Toronto Golf Club but also loved golfing in Florida especially during the dark, cold winter months. His golf brought him to Ireland on many occasions which helped maintain connections with his mother Anastasia until her passing in December 2013, his sisters, brothers in law and the wider family. Ed was a charismatic man who made a big impression on all who met him, he was very lucky to have many loyal friends who were there for him when needed as he was for them. A kind, thoughtful, honest, caring and understanding man who got the most out of life but who always strove to help others professionally and personally.

He is and will be missed by all who were lucky to have known him.

May Ed. Rest in Peace (R.I.P.).

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga (Hwy 10 N. of Q.E.W) on Thursday, September 28, 2023 for 5-8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, 625 Atwater Ave, Mississauga, on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 11 am.

Ed, I spent a lovely summer with you many years ago when I was a young student. You took me into your home and heart, your kind ways and gentleness has stayed with me ever since. It was wonderful to see you and mom grow ever so close over the last ten years, your renewed friendship with her made her very very happy. You will be missed by us all. S.

Dear Dr Ryan,

Your sudden departure from our world onto your heavenly home has left a lasting void in our hearts.
It has been an honour having known you. A privilege having been on your team helping many many parents realize their dream of parenthood. It is indeed a loss to those who did not have an opportunity of knowing you or have the chance of being under your care.
You have been in our prayers and will continue to be in our thoughts.

May you rest in eternal peace,
May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

Om Shanthi🙏🏼 as we say in our culture and country.

We are very shocked and saddened that Ed has passed.
