In Celebration of

Doreen E. Huffman (nee Oliver)

June 30, 1924 -  December 24, 2023

Peacefully on December 24, 2023 in her 100th year. Predeceased in 2007 by her beloved husband of 59 years, M. John (Jack) Huffman. Loving and generous Mom to Ken (Julia), Bob (Ona), and Jane Chaban (Mark). Loving and proud Grammy of Tom (Katie) and Jack (Nicole), Nancy (Josh) and Alanna (Kyle), and Will (Ashleigh) and Mike (Sarah), and great Grammy to Eddie, Jack and Lucy, and Everett and Milo. Beloved older sister of Audrey Jean Langford of Nelson, BC with whom she shared so many family adventures and the late Joan Cavers. Also mourned by nieces, nephews and friends old and new across Canada and the world.

Born in Calgary to William J. Oliver and Marjorie B. (Martin) Oliver, Doreen spent her formative years on the family ranch at Millarville, AB.

In 1948 she met her future husband through mutual friends on a ski trip in the Rockies; he was the guy standing on his head in the corner. Maybe a sign that life with Jack would be interesting!

Doreen created loving homes for her family as Jack’s Imperial Oil career took them to Redwater, Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton and finally back to Toronto.

Inspired by her love of Geography studies and her father’s travels as a photographer/ documentarian and her family trips to pre-War England, Doreen loved travel and embraced retirement adventures with Jack, traveling to 6 continents and keeping detailed notes and photo records of each of their 25+ international trips. When she was a young girl Doreen wrote a wish list of places she wanted to visit and was able to cross every one off her list – the last one, transiting the Panama Canal in 2010!

Doreen loved to bake and was also artistically creative, sewing, crafting, weaving, knitting and crocheting. Doreen loved to be a hostess, never sitting still when entertaining until everyone had their “cold drink”. She treasured time with her grand and great grandchildren, baking cookies together, teaching them card games and being a big part of their lives. Doreen was an active member and volunteer at St Luke’s and Humber Valley United Churches.

Special notes of thanks to Dr. Louis Giavedoni and his team at St Mike’s whose efforts preserved Doreen’s eyesight through 16 years of macular degeneration treatment and to the wonderful staff at Scarlett Heights Retirement Residence where Doreen spent her last 6 years. Also, thank you for the care and compassion Doreen received at West Park Rehab Centre last summer and in her final days at William Osler (Etobicoke) Hospital.

A celebration of Doreen’s life will take place in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to Humber Valley United Church Memorial Fund or St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation (Ophthalmology) would be greatly appreciated.

I was a pastoral visitor to Doreen for many years and our times together gave us both great pleasure. She was a special lady.
