In Celebration of

Donald Keith Smythe

April 27, 1924 -  November 20, 2016

Passed peacefully at home surrounded by family at 92 years of age. Don was a true gentleman with the highest moral character who cherished family and friends beyond all – loving, giving and kind with a terrific sense of humour.
In Don’s words, “the old boy has been the luckiest of men all through my life with two wonderful loving wives”. Don will be forever missed by his cherished wife of 28 years, Mary Pallett Smythe (nee Leuty) and late Betty Smythe (nee Rennie) beloved wife of Don for 39 years.
Don and Betty had 5 loving daughters and devoted sons-in-law who he considered sons. Rennie Smythe, Jackie Stephens (Gerry), Heather Sansom (Paul), Kelly Sparfel (Ken) and Nancy Smythe (Rocco Rauseo).
“Bubba” was so loved by his 8 grandchildren Kristy (Pat), Michael (Karen), Danny (Vanessa), Rennie, Mark, Brad, Hannah and Jesse. Proud Great-Bubba to Taylor, Calvin and Summer. Happiest singing songs, playing crib or casting a line at many family gatherings at Canning Lake, Caug, Florida, and Muskoka.
Don will be missed by dear Mary and her children James Pallett, Megan Pallett (Nicholas Collins), Cameron Pallett (Ina), Drew Pallett (Angela) and late Wesley Pallett. Loving Grandpa Don to John (Jennifer), Melissa (Armando), Michael Owen (Patrick), Simon (Trinh), Ryan, Dane (Christine), Edward, Thomas, Regan, Nicholas, Drew Jr., Jacob, Jordan, Mary and Catherine. Great-Grandpa Don to Kate, Lucy, Wesleigh, Finnleigh, Anna and Thomas.
Don is fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law.
Predeceased by his loving parents Irene Mildred (nee James) and Thomas Neil Smythe, dear sisters Shirley Coates and Jacqueline Smythe.
A proud Canadian who served as an Officer during WWII on the HMCS Chambly. Don formed lasting friendships during his long career as President of Glidden Paint Canada and as owner of Donsco Adhesives.
Don won nine Canadian Badminton National Titles and represented his Country internationally. He was inducted into both The Etobicoke and Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame. “Don Smythe was one of Canada’s most dynamic and personable champions”.
Don valued the camaraderie of his friendships at The Boulevard Club, Weston, Delray Dunes and The Toronto Golf Club as much as the sports themselves. And now Don has ‘gone fishin’ in higher waters.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Toronto Golf Club, 1305 Dixie Rd., Mississauga, on Monday, November, 28, 2016 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
“Semper Ad Meliora”

Over the years Don has benefited from the care and advice of several exceptional people.
The family would like to thank Dr. James Paupst, Dr. Robert Chisholm, Dr. James Pencharz and Gord Canning NP.
A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful 'angels' and the outstanding staff and residents at Parkland on the Glen.

I was one of the lucky ones who knew "Mr. Smythe" from the time I could talk. I have so many wonderful memories and many of those came out of the close friendship of the Biddells and the Smythes over decades. Don's generosity of spirit, sense of humour and the affection he had for family and friends defined him. 92 is a life well-lived. My sincere condolences to "the girls" and all his big family. And, I have a great fish story to remember him by!

The families of SMYTHES
It is especially painful to loss a loved one in death.
However, Millions world wide are assured of the promises found in the bible ( John 5: 28-29) and (Act 24:15).
At that time the earth will be a PARADISE , and DEATH will be no more.
Our God Jehovah will make all things new again (Rev 21:3-5).
May those promises comfort you all at this time.
Kindly accept my sincere condolences.

My sincere condolence for the loss of your wonderful father. If you looked in the Dictionary for the word Gentlemen you would see a picture of your father. He was always perfectly dressed and had a smile on his face. He always had time for everyone and we at the Toronto Golf Club miss him and his wonder smile.

You are all very lucky to have had a wonder dad. They don't make them like that anymore.

My prayers and condolences go out to you all.

Don was a very friendly, kind and generous person.
I was glad I was able to see him and say hello at an event this past summer. :)
