In Celebration of

Dedra Lauren Chaban

January 29, 1966 -  June 26, 2025

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Dedra Lauren Chaban. Dedra passed away peacefully on June 26, 2025, with family by her side at her home in Mississauga. Dedra will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 32 years, Roman; children, Yuri, Peter, Stefan, and Joelle; sisters, Dawn, Darby, Dayna, and Danielle; brother-in-law Dr. Gerald Chaban; parents Rosemary and Noel Swaenepoel and numerous other family members and friends.

Dedra was born in Simcoe, Ontario, in 1966. She received a degree in Health Records Management at Niagara College, eventually moving to Toronto to work at the Humber River Hospital where she would meet her future husband, Dr. Roman Chaban. They would marry in 1992 and raise four wonderful children.

Dedra was a devoted wife and mother, and someone who was very strong in her Christian faith. She was a friendly, thoughtful, and compassionate person with an amazing ability to easily make new friends; there was no one she could not start a conversation with. Dedra had a very creative and practical mind. She also had many passions including playing and coaching hockey, skiing, gardening as well as just talking to her many friends. Dedra loved animals and had many pets throughout her life.

Despite receiving a cancer diagnosis 12 years ago, Dedra’s outlook on life never changed. She always made time and deeply cared for her friends, and most importantly her family. Many thanks to all of Dedra’s doctors, nurses and allied Health Personnel who cared for Dedra during her long journey. Special thanks to Channelle who cared for Dedra during her last year of life.

Dedra will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Our hearts are breaking for you, Roman, and the children. I have fond memories of playing cards with you and Dedra, and of our kids spending time together in your pool. Dedra introduced me to playing women’s hockey and she was a threat on the ice. She was also a big Mama Bear, fiercely devoted her boys and Joelle. May you find strength in your memories to help navigate this difficult time.
