In Celebration of

M. David R. Brown

July 9, 1934 -  March 7, 2017

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved David Brown. David died at St. Michael’s Hospital on March 7th in the presence of his family. He leaves behind his wife Marion, his son Chris (Melanie Smith), daughter Clare (Derek de Gannes) and stepson Don Caunter (Sandra). He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Erica, Emma, Moira and Garrett. David will also be missed by his wide and varied circle of friends.

A native of Winnipeg, David studied actuarial science at the University of Manitoba, winning the gold medal. In 1960 he moved to Toronto to join Eckler Ltd. and over the next 55 years he built a distinguished career in pension and benefits consulting. He was active in the development of his profession, serving as president of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Chair of the International Association of Consulting Actuaries, vice-president of the Society of Actuaries and as member of the Pension Commission of Ontario.

David was a man of great integrity and this informed his conduct in all areas of his life. His gentlemanly nature was matched by his rigorous intellect and his penchant for knowledge led him to pursue many passions: history, the arts, philosophy, music, extensive travel, and wine. He cherished his quiet time with Marion at the end of each day over the cryptic crossword puzzle with a G&T. David was a convivial and quietly competitive fellow and enjoyed his many friends whether it was on the curling ice, at the bridge table, or at the ballpark cheering on his beloved Blue Jays.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Saturday March 11, 2017 from 3p.m. until service time in the chapel at 4p.m. with a reception to follow. As an expression of sympathy donations can be made to the St. Michael’s Hospital.

Very sorry to hear of David's passing. He was a wonderful, supportive colleague while I was on the Ontario Pension Board. We had many delightful discussions over lunch and during meetings. I also enjoyed his joie-de-vivre at the High Park Curling Club. He will be sorely missed. My sincere condolences to all his family.

It is with much sadness that I learned of David's passing. In all the years that I've been associated with him (over 30 years) he was definitely "a gentleman and a scholar" and a pleasure and privilege to have known him. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the visitation or the service tomorrow, but my thoughts will be with Marion and the family. Kay M.

Marion - We are so sorry to hear of David's passing. We always enjoyed playing bridge at the Toronto Bridge Club with you two. You were good players, and always very pleasant to share a game with. We will miss you as a bridge pair, but hope you keep playing.
