In Celebration of

David Livingstone

February 2, 1948 -  April 20, 2017

David Livingstone, brilliant mind and icon of fashion journalism, died suddenly of heart failure at home on Thursday, April 20, 2017. Born on Cape Breton Island, schooled at the University of Toronto, David began his career writing about music, but soon brought his wit and wonder to the world of fashion. As a writer for The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star, fashion and beauty editor of Elm Street, and editor-in-chief of The Look and Men’s FASHION, he delighted in originality, whether he was interviewing a Canadian designer or reporting on a runway show in Paris. He demanded excellence from all around him, making us all better for it. David is survived by his daughter Alexandra, his brothers Johnny, Lloyd, Stephen (Sue), two nieces, a nephew, and countless friends whom he loved dearly. A visitation will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., immediately followed by a memorial service in the chapel. A Celebration of David’s Life will be held in the near future.

A powerful force, a great talent, an artist soul, a sense of humour that cuts through the grain and an Energy that will be so very much missed.

My deep condolences to members of David's immediate and extended family. I knew him early on at The Globe and Mail where his novel insights and inimitable writing style established him as one our newspaper's greats. He contributed much and will be greatly missed, his seat now sadly empty in the front row.

I am still in shock hearing about David and I will miss him terribly. He was a wonderful person, admittedly curmudgeonly at times, but such a delight to be with. We spent a lot of time together over the years since meeting in Wymilwood at Vic some 50 years ago...smoked a lot of cigarettes, drank a lot of drinks, had many, many laughs, travelled to Europe together many years ago etc etc. He meant so much to such a variety of people.

I cannot be there on Wednesday but will be thinking about him. It is so fitting to have a Celebration of Life and look forward to sharing all the memories at that time.

I first encountered David's writing in The Globe and Mail. He wrote about fashion in a new, richer way, giving the subject a depth it deserved but rarely received. I was in high school then and would clip his pieces and file them away, never in my wildest dreams thinking that one day we would be colleagues. Later, when I would tell David what an inspiration he had been to me, and about the newspaper clippings I still kept, he'd look impatient and change the subject. But I feel he was secretly pleased too. Once he began freelancing, I finally had the opportunity to collaborate with him. Whenever I saw "David Livingstone" in my email box, I knew I had a great read in store, crafted with love. Over the years, we would bump into each other—at the newsagents or the bank— and have a little chat. R.I.P.
