In Celebration of

David John Vernon Price

December 11, 1924 -  October 27, 2022

David John Vernon Price peacefully passed away at home on October 27, 2022, just 6 weeks short of his 98th birthday.

Vernon was Norah’s (née Murray) beloved husband of 64 years, adored father of Katherine Anne, loved father-in-law of Vigen Nazarian and cherished grandfather to Matthew Armen and Christopher David Nazarian. Vernon was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Vernon was born Dec 11, 1924, in the town of Llandovery, Carmarthenshire Wales to the late Margretta Anne Price (nee Thomas) and late David John Price. He was their only child. His early childhood was spent in Llandovery Wales, Gloucester and eventually Birmingham England, before returning to Llandovery to attend boarding school at Llandovery College. Vernon was a proud Old Llandoverian alumni, returning to Wales to connect with old classmates and friends several times in the 1990’s at Llandovery college rugby matches, a game he played, watched, and truly enjoyed in Wales and in Canada. Vernon graduated from Llandovery College in 1942, achieving an Oxford University entrance certificate but due to WWII was not able to attend. Instead, he pursued technical studies closer to his current home in Birmingham and served initially in the 12th Worcester Battalion Home Guard “B” Company before being conscripted into the regular army serving as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Engineers.

After discharge from duty in 1948, Vernon trained as a structural steel engineer and draughtsman, eventually immigrating to Canada in 1952. He sailed from Southampton, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax on Oct 9, 1952, as a landed immigrant, and taking the train on to Montreal, 70 years ago this month. Vernon worked for Dominion Bridge Inc. contributing to many of the buildings, bridges and structures built in Montreal, and surrounding areas of Quebec and New York State including the Place Ville Marie towers in Montreal and the Canadian Pulp and Paper Pavilion for Expo 67 where he received recognition for his contributions. In 1969, after relocating to Ontario and now working for Canron Inc., Vernon was involved with the construction of many of the steel skyscrapers built in the early 1970’s that dot the Toronto skyline today, including TD towers and the steel section from the observation tower upward of the ionic CN Tower. Vernon continued to work in the structural steel design and engineering field until retirement at age 65.

Vernon loved Canada and the natural wilderness. He escaped to nature whenever able, camping, canoeing, swimming in the lakes of the Laurentian mountains in the summer and skiing the hills in winter. It was here where he met Norah, and they were married in Montreal in 1958. Vernon continued to stay active well into retirement with daily walks and skied until age 84 with his family and grandsons.

Vernon was philanthropic with his time volunteering with charities and being engaged in the community whether through election canvassing, acting as a Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, teaching adult literacy, or with children’s charities, he gave freely of his time and resources.

Vernon was committed to family and was a very active and supportive son, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather. He was handy with tools, he was always creating projects, playhouses, furniture, swings, fixing bikes for neighbourhood children, gardening and ensuring their house was a favorite treat stop for the neighbourhood dogs. He was always there for the people he loved and cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.

A thank you for the medical care from Dr. James Pencharz of Credit Valley Hospital and the many wonderful PSWs who have gone above and beyond over the years. Your work is truly appreciated.

--The greatest legacy anyone can leave, is to positively impact the lives of others who live on after you have gone. --
