In Celebration of

Danilo Luigi Castagna

July 5, 1928 -  January 26, 2022

Danilo Castagna passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto in his 94th year after suffering a stroke at home.
He was loved and cared for by his children Francesco (Heather) and Maria (Alexander) and grandsons Dante and José Danilo. Predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Rosa. He leaves behind sisters Armida, Rita, and Francesca and sisters-in-law Lina and Rosanna in Italy, Rosa’s cousin and best friend Gianna in Toronto, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Danilo emigrated to Sudbury from Valdagno, Vicenza, Italy in 1957 and was joined by Rosa three years later when he had saved enough to pay for her passage. He worked for many years as a bricklayer and stonemason, and his handiwork can be seen at many residences in and around the Sudbury region. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his time trekking through the bush to get to his favourite fishing holes, well into his eighties. In his retirement, Danilo and Rosa vacationed in Puerta Vallarta Mexico for a month every winter, but still loved coming home to do some ice fishing. They both enjoyed their vegetable garden in Sudbury as well as the autumn bounty of their pear tree. His favourite role was being a fun and loving Nonno to his grandsons.
The family would like to thank Reconnect Community Services Day Program – Bloor Street West for their support and care over the past eight years. Even with his Alzheimer’s disease Danilo was a happy participant and occasional Italian singer.
Donations to Reconnect in memory of Danilo can be made at https://www.reconnect.on.ca/
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in both Toronto and Sudbury.

Our sincere condolences on the passing of your father and grandfather. Dani (with some help from Francesco) layed the block and the brick at our Attlee street home in 1982 and we still admire his wonderful craftsmanship 40 years later. He was a true gentleman who always greeted us with a warm smile and a handshake every time we met in the years that followed.

Francesco and Maria Rosa, I'm so sorry for your loss. I've known your Dad & Mum for so many years in Sudbury and consider them very good friends. We lost touch when he moved to Toronto but I always remember his frequent visits and will never forget his support and kindness when my husband passed away. May he rest in eternal peace. God Bless.

To the Castagna family,

Francesco, Maria and family, I am so sad to hear of the passing of your father. He was not only a really good friend to my father Herbert but to the entire Niesing family. I have very precious memories of him both having worked with him on project along side my father and having gone hunting and fishing with him...... I particularly remember hunting woodcock in the Sudbury area. What a great man and he will be missed.

May our Lord bless and comfort you and your family during this time of grief. Please accept our sincere condolences.

Jean and I are so very sorry to hear about your Dad. Mom would love when Danilo would sing in Italian. Your dad would smile when it was pointed out that he was exactly 5 months older than my mom. When your dad smiled, he lit up the room. That is the way he will be remember. The program won't be the same without him. He will be missed.
