We will miss Danilo's friendship, and especially his impromptu visits when we shared pasta, or salami & fresh bread buns, or a radicchio salad, all with a glass or two of good wine and lots of entertaining conversation. Danilo, may you rest in peace in the arms of our Lord. Our sincerest condolences to his beloved Miretta, his children and grandchildren. We will remember all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

I knew Danilo was a very good friend of my father and would always fondly bring him up in conversation. As a child, including my brother Eddy and sister Sonya, we grew up getting to know the Berdusco Family. We still recall and have home videos showing us swimming with the boys back in the 70’s. The in ground swimming pool was new and temporary fenced by plywood. A newly constructed addition on the back of the house still needed to a window installed on the 2nd floor level, but made for an ideal launching pad for Lou to dive from that level into the pool.

There were other social family and friend get-togethers over those early years. I particularly remember our Confirmation Party for my brother and I being confirmed by our oldest Uncle who arrived from Italy to do the church service. Family and friends including the Berdusco Family were there to celebrate and share with us in our special day.

I knew a bit of my father’s admiration for Danilo as he would tell stories about those early years working for Danny and Company. As I asked him last night about those years after our visitation, I got to know more about my father’s life with Danilo and what they had in common. My father, Rosario Fregonese was born same year, Danilo being older by 2 months. My father also attended Danilo’s wedding 59 years ago.
Rosario wanted to come to Canada in 1954 but “family obligations” kept him from joining up with his brother Gino living in Canada. Two years later he was able to leave Italy and join Gino, Danilo and Johnny Genedese’s carpentry business. It was Danilo who greeted and picked up my Dad when he arrived from Treviso Italy to settle in Cooksville Ontario.

Shortly afterwards, not sure how long, but, my uncle Gino had a change of heart to stay in Canada and went back to marry his sweetheart in Italy. Leaving behind the carpentry business he built up with his 2 partners. It was Danilo who assure my father not to worry and took him under his wing. He told him even though your brother is leaving; you’ll be able make it on your own and you’ll see that your life will be better living in Canada. In fact, he was right my father never looked back. Canada, he is proud to call home.

In those days, there was no Mississauga, it was town called Cooksville where unpaved roads were common and like Oakville and Brampton, these cities needed a lot home development and roads. Many of those houses still exist today that were built by Danny and Company. My father had worked along side with them for about 10 years. Not only did they construct homes but they also built St. Catherine of Sienna Church. Augusto Fregonese and my father worked on the Clergy’s residence that was part of the church for entire week for a Clergy’s wage. The charity work they put in, the Priest promised that Heaven will have a special place for them one day. We share in the funeral service the Life of Danilo Berdusco in the very same church that they had a part in its development. I wanted tell a story on how much Danilo meant to our family and to express our family’s heartfelt condolences to the Berdusco family. May now he rest in peace and let’s hope Heaven has a special place for him and everyone that will join him someday.

Sincerely Rosario, Elvira (Lina), Enzo, Eddy Fregonese and Sonia Gazzola
