In Celebration of

Danutė (Dana) Naikauskas

March 27, 1923 -  January 11, 2017

Dana passed away peacefully in Toronto in her 93rd year. Predeceased by her husband Stasys (Stanley), and her brothers and sisters in the USA and Lithuania. Beloved mother of Rita Sarunas and Alma Naikauskas (Algis Slapsys) and grandchildren Daniel, Alexandra, Tomas and Remy. She will be lovingly remembered by Paul Sarunas, her nieces Vida McAndrew in Michigan and Birute Ambrazevičienė in Kaunas, and their families as well as relatives in the USA and Lithuania. Dana was born the youngest of five on a large farm in Lithuania where her love of nature, trees and plants originated. She started her career at Kaunas University but the war intervened so her Doctorate of Dental Surgery was completed in Hamburg, Germany. After emigrating to the USA, she worked as a dental technician at Ford Hospital in Detroit. Then her brother-in-law introduced her to Stanley, they wed and she moved to Canada. After becoming proficient in English, Dana graduated from Dalhousie University, Halifax, the only female in her class. Now she could practise her beloved dentistry in Canada. They settled in Windsor, to be closer to her sisters in Michigan, where she opened her solo practise. She practised for 35 years, until retirement. She was a trailblazer as a female dentist in Canada, and even featured in the Windsor Star. She also volunteered for many years in Riverview Chronic Care Hospital, working with ancient equipment to address the patients’ dental aches and pains. Dana and Stanley and their daughters enthusiastically joined the Lithuanian Community in Windsor, where they made life-long friends. Mum loved to travel; visiting her brother in Lithuania many times, her sister in Florida annually, as well as trips to Asia, South America, Europe and the Cayman Islands where she got her Open Water Diving Certification at the age of 60. She cruised Alaska and Scandinavian fjords, always having a love of swimming and the oceans. We will remember Mum’s generosity, her unbelievable work ethic and determination, her kind heart and of course, her green thumb. Her rhododendrons and gardens were renowned in the neighbourhood. Floral arrangements in her memory can be sent to Turner and Porter, Butler Chapel where her memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22nd, from 2 – 4 pm. Donations will also be accepted in lieu of flowers, to Labdara foundation, (please note: nursing home) where we are grateful for the loving care Mum received in her final year. Special thanks to Richard, who could always make her smile, Namgyl who looked after her like a family member, and all the nurses and staff on the third floor. In the spring, a service in her memory will be held at Anapilis Church followed by burial at St. John’s Lithuanian cemetery in Mississauga.

DANUTĖ NAIKAUSKIENĖ (NATKEVIČIŪTĖ), beveik sulaukusi 94 metų, mirė š. m. Sausio 11 d. Toronte. Daug metų gyveno Windsore, ON ir praėjusius metus Labdaroj. Nebuvo augulo kuris jai neaugdavo. Tai gėlių aukos mielai priimamos, arba vietoj gėlių, Mamos atminime prašome aukoti: Labdara Foundation. Nuoširdžiai kviečiame gimines, draugus ir pažįstamus dalyvauti atsisveikinime kuris įvyks Sausio 22 d., sekmadienį nuo 2:00 val. iki 4:00 val., Turner & Porter Butler Chapel. Pavasaryj bus palaidota Šv. Jono Kapinėse, šalia vyro Stasio. Ilsėkis ramybėje, brangi Mama. Tavo darbščios rankos nusvirę, Tavo darbai atlikti

Nebeišgirsim jau daugiau Mamos Danutės balso,
Tik paliks atmintyj jos žodžiai ištarti,
Užgeso mielos akys, nusviro darbščios rankos,
Ir paliko vien sielvartas širdyj.

Ji gyvens kiekvienu gražiu žiedu,
Bus vėjeliu ir plaukus sušukuos,
Bus rankšluostėliu kai ašara nurieda,
Ir tik sapne paguodos ranką bepaduos.

Visos mūsų maldos kasdieninės,
Viešpatie, duok tėviškės dangaus.
Tik tenai pailsusios krūtinės,
Po visų kelionių atsigaus.

My sincere condolences as I very much admired her passion to keep learning. Some of my teeth still have the fillings she put in 50 years ago. What a testament to the excellent work she performed. May she rest in peace.

While I didn't know Danute well, I'll remember her for her welcoming and kindness to me at family events. My sincere condolences to Rita, Alma and the family for the loss of such a wonderful lady.

Dr. Naikauskas was our family dentist for many years. She always had a smile and a great personality. My Mom was a big fan of hers; she would bring homemade strawberry jam on most visits. (We still tell stories of trips to her office!)
My condolences to her family.

Dana was a lovely woman and kind neighbor. We will fondly remember her for sharing her advice and passion for gardening and inviting us in her backyard to see her hard work. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Sincere condolences Alma, Rita and family.
