In Celebration of

Daly Hendrick

August 26, 1933 -  June 29, 2017

Daly (Dale) Hendrick, 83, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2017 with Norma, his lifelong love and wife of 62 years, their children and grandchildren closely at his side.

He is survived by his family who loved and respected him greatly --Norma (nee McGlade), and his four children: Paul (Alicia Sarabia); Kathryn (James Hutchison); Susan (Robert Jones) and Lynn (Gregory Bertrand). Dearly treasured and admired by his twelve grandchildren: Caroline and Michael Hendrick; Scott, Sean and Kristen Hutchison; Ryan, David and Kyle Jones; and Nicholas, Alexander, Addison and Lauren Bertrand.

Survived by brother Brian Hendrick (Pat McAinsh) and Aunt Elizabeth Kennedy; and predeceased by brothers John and Maurice Hendrick (Pauline), he joins them and his parents Edwin and Eileen Hendrick in heaven.

He was overjoyed to get to Charlotte, North Carolina to celebrate his Aunt Bessy’s 90th birthday in April, and to see so many of beloved cousins and family from Chelsea, Quebec, Ottawa and the United States.

A geological engineer, educated at Queen’s University, Dale was a foremost Canadian authority in gold, base metals and uranium exploration. He worked for Kerr Addison Mines for thirty years until starting a thriving consulting career in 1989 that took him and Norma around the world for the next thirty years.

Dale’s success and discovery of ore bodies inspired many to enter the field of geology. His loyalty, integrity and leadership inspired everyone who knew or worked with him. His legacy is deeply rooted in his children, their spouses and his grandchildren to take the path less traveled, to take a risk but set a goal, and always to do what is fair and right.

He had no enemies because he would never hurt anyone and because he truly believed and practiced his motto: ‘It costs nothing to be nice to people’. Instead he had dedicated, lifelong friends in many people around the world -- in Ken Murton, Morley Torgov, Jim Blake, Bob Bryce, Harry Hodge, Hugh Jones, Max Juby, and so many others whose lives he touched.

Although Dale always shared his other motto: “Nobody rides for free”, he took his wife, children, spouses, and grandchildren on a Hawaiian island cruise for his and Norma’s 50th wedding anniversary. In three extraordinary excursions, he brought every family member to South Africa, in different groupings, to experience and learn about the cradle of civilization. The family rode for free but the ride was invaluable.

From his early years in Sandy Hill, Ottawa to his life in Rouyn Noranda, Fredericton, and Toronto, he never lost his values that stemmed from humble beginnings, hard work, and an endless curiosity in the world around him. There was no bigger fan of the Toronto Blue Jays or a piece of pumpkin pie. His life was rich, immense, and full as long as he had his one and only girl, Norma, by his side, which he did to the end.

Rest in peace Dad, and know the joy and truth you left in us will go on forever.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a contribution to the Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation Centre of Excellence in Breast Cancer Screening & Treatment at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Etobicoke. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dad’s clinical teams at the Princess Margaret Hospital, the Toronto General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Dorothy Ley Hospice.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Monday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Basil’s Catholic Parish, 50 St. Joseph St., Toronto, on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at 10 a.m.

I will remember Mr. Hendrick with fondness. I always was pleased to see him when I came to visit Kath or Susan so many years ago, and he was always full of wisdom and good advice. I'm sorry for your loss, but heartened by the knowledge that he had a great life, raise a fabulous family, and was with you a long time.
