In Celebration of

Colin Jarvis

November 7, 1967 -  January 17, 2022

Well, the time has come to say good bye. I have really enjoyed my life, but this cancer thing is brutal.

My parents (Earl Jarvis and Mabel Gilliland) moved us – sisters Sheri Brown (Kevin, and nephew William) and Leigh Balgopal (Jason) - around a bit when we were kids: Montreal, Oakville, Oshawa, and Etobicoke. The highlight was two years spent in Saudi Arabia. Living in the Middle East and the travelling we did really opened my eyes to the magnitude of the diversity in our world. I am forever grateful for the experience.

Through my best friend Ritchie, I met my wife Tricia. Life hasn’t been the same since, and I am a better person for having her in my life. She has taught me so much. We have had twenty-nine years of marriage and two incredible daughters, Bridgette and Charlotte. We have had so many wonderful experiences as a family ranging from travel to building our pandemic patio. It has been truly joyful to watch them grow and make their way in the world.

I was involved in soccer from 1973 to 2011, first as a player, then referee, and then coach of my daughters. I was honoured to officiate in a number of Ontario Cup competitions. In 2012, I rekindled my love of biking and became a member of the Etobicoke Cycling Club. I have made so many friends on the bike who have made my journey with cancer much more livable. Since my diagnosis in April 2020 I have ridden over 15,000 km.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce `90 from McMaster, I worked for a number of organizations: NCR, Sprint, Rogers, Pitney Bowes, RBC and finally TD. I won a couple of awards over the years and worked with many great people. Thanks to all who reached out over the past 20+ months.

I owe a great deal of thanks to Dorothy Ley Hospice for making a really unpleasant journey much more bearable. A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Chopra and Joni Mann. I couldn’t have done it without you.

If you feel the urge to order flowers, please sit down, it will pass; feel free instead to donate to the McMaster University Colin Jarvis Memorial Bursary Fund or the Dorothy Ley Hospice through the Make a Donation link below.

A celebration of life will be held on April 18, 2022 2-4 pm at The Vue Clubhouse.

To help keep everyone safe, we ask that you only attend if you have been fully vaccinated, and we ask that everyone please take a rapid test before you arrive.

Date and Time: April 18th 2022, 2-4pm, speeches will begin at 2:30.
Location: The Vue Clubhouse, 195 Galaxy Blvd. Etobicoke, On.
Please park in the lower parking lot; the clubhouse is the lower part of the building and the entrance faces the golf course.

Colin you will be missed. Who else can I call or text at any time who will remember the address and phone number of every house we ever lived in growing up? You have been a great brother, husband, father and uncle and your sense of humour shines through - even in your obituary. Yes, the feeling did pass and donations are coming instead of flowers. I love you.

Colin and I worked together at RBC and he was such a kind and fun person to be around. You can tell that he was very dedicated to his family and very proud on his daughters. I am incredibly sad to hear this news and want to send my condolences to his family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Colin

I'm going to miss you. Your humour and wit. Your mischievous grin. Your fun spirit.

I see this fun side of you even in your own obituary...yes, when the thought of sending flowers came over me, I sat down, and it passed; we'll be contributing to the bursary.

I know you'll never see these comments and my tears. But I know that's how you wanted it, no teary goodbyes. I'll remember the last time I saw you: we hugged as if we were parting only for a week and not forever, and we smiled, not cried.

The tears are for your family.

Colin was one-of-a-kind and I consider myself lucky to have known him. He was so full of life and joy. As a child I enjoyed his amazing sense of humour and looked forward to spending time with him at family events. At that time, he was lovingly known as "cheeseball junior". I'm so glad my children were able to have some time with Colin over the past several years and like me, they always looked forward to playing with Colin. I look forward to watching his two incredible daughters thrive and grow, and seeing glimpses of Colin in each of them. He will be missed, always.

Through just a few weekends up at TAP, you definitely left a mark. Always adding your humour and fun to those a little projects around camp. Jarvis family you are all in my thoughts. Big love.
