Christine (Krysia) Polić (née Pilarski) was born of Władisława (Władia) Krawczyk (†2006) and Jan Pilarski (†1979) on June 26th, 1948 in Blanc Mesnil, France, on the outskirts of Paris. She lived there until the age of 8 with her two younger siblings, Janine (Jenny Cimprič) and Richard (†2003) - close to Władia’s parents (Zosia †1984 and Stanisław †1977) and their younger son Stanisław (Stasiu) and family. The Pilarskis immigrated to Canada in 1956 to build a new life.
Christine maintained vivid memories of her early years in France and her first impressions of immigrating to Canada. Although languages were her strong suit, she recalls her first few months of school in Canada as being very difficult considering she was only fluent in Polish and French; a lived experience that was formative. Soon after, English became her third language, then later she pursued her Bachelor of Arts in French, Russian and German at the University of Toronto, and finally she became fluent in Croatian after becoming a “Polić”.
Her childhood in the St. Clair and Oakwood neighbourhood of Toronto, at 148 Earlsdale Ave., was spent attending Rawlinson P.S. and Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute, helping her father at his job sites, her mother at home, and caring for her two youngest siblings Barbara (Basia Tillie) and Jan (Charlie).
Christine was involved in Polish cultural groups in Toronto throughout her youth; travelling across Canada with the Polish folklore dance group, Adam Miskiewicz, playing the accordion in polka bands and even as a radio announcer for Polish programming on CHIN radio. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka parish on Denison St. in Toronto and a member of their choir. She would later continue her music ministry as a member of, and playing the piano for, the Divine Mercy Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group in Streetsville over a period of 25 years.
She married Duško Polić (†2007) on July 31th, 1971 and they eventually settled in the High Park area. They moved to Barrisdale Dr. in Mississauga in 1978 to operate their paint and wallpaper store in Meadowvale and to raise their 4 children; Kristiana (Markelj), Marko, Maja (Nežić) and Anita (Healy). She was truly a gifted homemaker and always hospitable. “Home” was also in France where she spent summers with “Mémé”, her grandmother as well as a semester of university in Nice. In her later years she and Duško built a “summer home” in Croatia where she enjoyed several holidays.
Christine began her teaching career after the birth of her first child and worked for 35 years. Her career was dedicated to teaching French as a second language through her love of music and by weaving goodness and kindness into her daily curriculum. This allowed her to use her gifts and impart her love and passions to her daughters who all became teachers.
Duško and Christine became grandparents in 1999 with the birth of their first granddaughter Juliana Markelj, the first of many off-spring to come - 17 to date and counting, God-willing! Christine is cherished by her grandchildren and will be remembered for her lipstick stains on their foreheads, her insistence on sing-a-longs, her joyful, charismatic and kind spirit. She maintained her involvement with school children by teaching them how to pray through the Rosary Apostolate. She remained active in her faith throughout her life and was a strong witness to her Christian faith until the very end of her days.
May her legacy live on and her soul rest in the peace of Christ, her life.
