Christina passed away on November 3, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and community service. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
Christina was the treasured wife of Ihor Diakunchak with whom she shared 58 years of love and partnership. Together they built a beautiful life that spanned nearly six decades and took them from Montreal, to Burlington, to Orlando before finally settling in Mississauga.
In addition to her devoted husband, Ihor, Christina is survived by her loving children, Yuriy (Marichka) and Ksenia (Gregory), and grandchildren Tanya, Larysa, and Demyan. They will cherish her memory forever and reminisce about their shared experience of their beloved wife, mother and babtsia.
Christina was born on June 26, 1945, in a wagon on a street in Vienna to Volodymyr and Maria Barahura. Her story began in Europe at the end of a global cataclysm, continued in New York through her formative years, Canada during the upbringing of her children, a decade in Florida, and then a return to Canada for a happy and peaceful retirement with Ihor.
She worked as a librarian for Northern Telecom, Oakville Public Library, and Sheridan College Library, as well as an early childhood educator at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic School in Hamilton. She also dedicated a lot of time, passion and energy into giving back to her community, volunteering in libraries, with children with disabilities, hospital patients, church groups and most recently at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch at St. Volodymyr Institute.
Christina was a long time member of Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization in the Pershiy Stezhi sorority, and the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada.
She loved art, good food, concerts, spending time with friends and family, and travel to varied places including Europe, Japan, Central America and the Caribbean.
She was a devout Catholic and belonged to Christ the Good Sheppard parish at St. Michael’s church in Toronto. She was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage and Ukrainian traditions and instilled a love for both in her children and grandchildren.
Christina lived her life with a steady devotion to her family, friends and the values she held dear.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the Canada Ukraine Foundation: Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal
