Passed away peacefully after a long illness on December 15, 2025, at age 88.
Christena was born in Winnipeg on August 22, 1937, the only child of her cherished late parents, Andrew and Anastasia Chruszcz, who had emigrated from Ukraine. The family moved to Toronto in 1939, where they would own a boarding house on Huron Street. Young Christena went to Lord Lansdowne public school, then to Harbord Collegiate, and finally to the University of Toronto.
She graduated from U of T's Dental Faculty in 1961, becoming one of the very few women dental surgeons practicing in Canada at the time. She then lived and worked for several years at a hospital in New York City, where she met her beloved late husband of 59 years, Giuseppe Famularo. Together, they moved permanently to Toronto, where they married in 1965. Several years later, they welcomed a son and daughter into their small family. She and Giuseppe enjoyed their Toronto home together until his passing in 2024, at age 97.
In her professional life, Chris cultivated an extremely successful dental practice in the Colonnade Building in Yorkville. She practiced there for over 45 years, and leaves as her greatest legacy the many hundreds of loyal patients whom she treated with skill, compassion, and generosity. After retiring at age 75, she volunteered her services at the Evangel Hall Mission, helping improve the dental health of many less-fortunate Torontonians.
Christena proudly sat for many years on the Bloor-Yorkville BIA and the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas, and happily donated her time to many other professional, civic, and heritage organizations.
Christena is survived by her children, Anthony and Lisa (Roger); and her beloved grandchildren, Miles and Ava. She also leaves many cousins (in particular Edward Lukowich and family), innumerable great friends and respected colleagues, and her favourite cat, Mischa. She will be missed and remembered by all.
The family wishes to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and support staff who helped Christena during her lengthy final illness, particularly those from the Dorothy Ley Hospice and the St. Joseph's Hospital palliative care unit.
If desired, donations in Christena's name may be made to St. Joseph's Hospital in Toronto, to the Dorothy Ley Hospice, or to the Evangel Hall Mission.
