In Celebration of

Charles Frederick “Fred” Wilson

June 18, 1932 -  March 13, 2021

Passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at the age of 88. Though his death was unexpected Fred had been suffering from a variety of ailments that made his life painful and limited in his last three years.

Fred was born in 1932 in Saskatoon to William James “Bill” and Martha Wilson (nee Pearson). He will be lovingly remembered by his sister Jean and the late William James “Bud”.

He joined the CNR in 1950 working in Biggar, Saskatchewan where he noticed a lovely CIBC teller named Elaine McLay. They married in 1954 and had three daughters, Linda, Doreen (Kevin Dunseath) and Sandra (Joe Matheson). Fred loved all his family including his grandchildren Emily and Paul Matheson and his many nieces and nephews.

Fred spent 44 years working for the CNR in Employee Relations in a number of locations, including Brandon, Winnipeg, Montreal, Capreol, Belleville and Toronto, retiring in 1994 in Mississauga, ON.

In addition to his family Fred loved golf, curling, watching the Leafs, watching any televised sports, his Presbyterian church (Erindale Presbyterian), travelling with Elaine and friends on cruises, and sending out joke emails. Above all he loved his life of 66 years with Elaine, who survives him. We wish he had more but are grateful for each day.

COVID restrictions limit the funeral to a private family service, to be held on March 17, 2021. A Memorial Ceremony will be held at Erindale Presbyterian church when circumstances allow. A link to the taped service will be made available for all to view.

Elaine and family, I am so sorry to learn of Fred's passing. Elaine, you and Fred welcomed me very warmly the minute I came through the door of Erindale. I love the picture as it is the way I remember him - the warm, friendly smile. Sending my deepest sympathy Elaine to you and all in your family. I pray God keep you close with His love to help heal your brokenness and bring you to a place of comfort and peace.

So sad to hear of Fred's death. I was fortunate to replace Fred at the time of his retirement in Toronto. Before "going to pasture" he gave me a good introduction to the territory and the job, which was greatly appreciated. Although we did not know each other prior to this time, we havre been in touch ever since, Our sincere condolances go 0ut to Elaine

Fred was one of the first persons I met when I joined Dixie Curling Club. A rookie, he took me under his wing and taught me a lot about the game. A really good guy.

Some of my earliest memories of Dad was in the yard of the small house in Brandon where we lived until 1961. Dad had a large garden which he no doubt learned from his Dad. I especially remember his grafting the fruit trees in the front yard. And we would stand in the garden at the end of the day and eat fresh picked vegetables.
Dad was never idle but would hold down second part time jobs to support his family, including as a life guard at the local pool. He taught us by example to always work hard.

Another part time job Fred held to support his growing family was to sell chickens and turkeys etc for a Winnipeg Hatchery. Fred hit the road on the weekends to drive out to the farms to take orders for hatchlings. Often Linda rode along and I like to think I helped with the sales.
At Easter Fred would bring home several recently hatched chicks for his girls to enjoy for a few weeks.

Each year Fred would plan a family vacation usually involving a train or road trip in the car. Fred would plan the trip during the winter and mail out letters to motels along the route to book the reservations. This was long before the internet and online reservations. Each summer the family would hit the road from Canada's east coast to west coast, Montreal for Expo 67 or a drive through the Dakotas. Traveling with three girls in the back seat before air conditioning was no doubt a challenge but forms so many of our family memories.

In latter years mom and dad relied on Meals on Wheels from the local VON. Dad hated them. If you wish to honour his memory you could contribute to lifting the quality of what they can offer 🙂. In all seriousness we have been grateful for their support. And dad hated being hard of hearing. It was a frustration every day. Donations to help advance the cause are also welcome! Finally they loved their church, Erindale Presbyterian, which has been the source of faith, comfort, fun, friendship and joy.
