In Celebration of

Birute Tamoliunas

November 1, 1928 -  April 5, 2020

Birute passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 2020 at Labdara Lithuanian Nursing Home in Toronto at the age of 91. She was born in Sakiai, Lithuania, lived in Germany and then England before settling in Canada.

Birute was predeceased by her beloved husband Jonas, sister Joana Zubrickas(Algimantas) and brother Algirdas Sukys. Birute has left behind her dear sister-in-law Vida Sukys. Birute and Jonas did not have any children of their own. She did have very special relationships with her nieces Julija Sukys (Sean), Vilte Valiulis (Algis) and nephews Paulius Sukys, Darius (Alberto) Zubrickas and Linas Zubrickas(Virginia). She will be dearly missed by great-nieces, great-nephews, a great-great niece and great-great nephews as well as her extended family across North America and in Lithuania.

Birute was very proud of her Lithuanian roots. She was fiercely independent. She liked everything being in its place. She cared about how her home looked and how she looked, always following fashion trends. She was very interested in the British Royal Family. She loved watching "Dancing with Stars". In her 80s, she purchased a computer so she could read the news from Lithuania daily and Skype with friends and family.

Birute was a dedicated employee of Mutual Life / Sunlife. She worked in the Payroll Department at Head Office in Waterloo, for more than 33 years, retiring in 1992. In retirement, she enjoyed meeting with former colleagues at the Concordia Club regularly.

Birute was blessed to have many good friends and neighbours. We are grateful to all who helped her in her later years. Habiba was a true friend and cared for Birute as though she were her own mother.

Birute lived in Labdara Lithuanian Nursing Home for 10 months. While there, she enjoyed singing in Lithuanian, going to Mass and eating Lithuanian food. We appreciate the wonderful care she received during that time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Labdara Lithuanian Nursing Home, through the nursing home website or to a charity of your choice. In light of the current restrictions due to Covid-19, a private funeral will be held. A celebration of her life will take place at a future date.

May Birute Rest In Peace.

With a sense of deep sadness we bid our farewell to Birute. We have known Birute for over thirty five years and have always admired her focus, strong convictions, discipline, and willingness to work hard. She and dede Jonas were an ispiration for both of us, a young couple with two young children.
Birute was very proud of her extended family and was always ready to share the news of their accomplishments. She greatly cared about the situation in her native Lithuania and helped any way she could to improve the welbeing of her relatives and friends there. She loved her native country from a distance, but strongly and to its core.
Not having any relations of my own in Canada, I looked to Birute for advice and guidance which she was so generous to share. She was my adopted aunt. Birute was my guide in how to decorate and run the house, how to entertain, how to appreciate beauty in everyday life. She taught me how to bake this delicious cake which it is known in our family as "Teta Birute's cake."
David and I moved a few times, and there were times when the contact with Birute wasn't as frequent as we would have wanted, but we always new she was there. She was one of the steady elements in our lives, a person we could always find in the same place we left.
Even though Birute has finished her journey on this earth, part of her will always stay in our hearts and our memories. We will remember her every time we enjoy her cake with a cup of coffee...
Rest in peace. Amzina atilsi.
