With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Bernice Estelle Rush (née Swatuk), aged 94, on February 19, 2026.
Born on June 26, 1931, Bernice lived a full and vibrant life, defined by her sharp wit, spirited nature, and unwavering zest for life. She was a force of nature – vibrant, spunky, and full of personality right to the end. Bernice loved a good laugh, a lively conversation, and any excuse to gather people together.
Bernice’s greatest pride and joy were her family: her late husband, Gordon, whom she missed dearly after his passing, and her cherished daughter, Melissa. Bernice gave freely of her heart, her time, and her care. She poured herself into motherhood and guiding Melissa through childhood dreams, teenage storms, and adult triumphs. Every sacrifice wove their lives together indelibly, strengthening their unshakeable mother/daughter bond.
Always the life of the party, dancing was Bernice’s greatest pastime – whether waltzing across a ballroom floor, jitterbugging to big band, or burning up the disco dance floor, she carried music in her soul. Until her eighties, she loved dancing with her wide group of friends formed in youth, at favourite places like Palais Royale and the Balmy Beach Club.
Bernice will be deeply missed by her devoted daughter, Melissa, and lovingly remembered by an expansive circle of nieces, nephews, and friends. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Gordon; her mother and father, Ann and Emilian Swatuk; and her siblings Jimmy, Billy, Russell, Ronnie, Raymond, Frances, Olga, Vera, Eileen, and Margie, resting in eternal peace surrounded by love.
Bernice believed that life was to be celebrated, not simply lived, and that belief shone in everything she did. Bernice inspired those around her to keep moving – through difficult times, through laughter, and always with a purpose. She lived her 94 years with grace and independence, reminding everyone that age could not dim true spirit.
Bernice will rest in eternal peace, forever held in the hearts of all who loved her.
