In Celebration of

Barbara Ann Johnston (nee Morrison)

May 10, 1938 -  December 28, 2016

Barbara Johnston passed away on December 28, 2016 at Ian Anderson House House, Oakville, after being diagnosed with cancer in October. She and her husband, Brian, lived most of their 52 years of marriage in Mississauga. Barbara was born May 10, 1938 in Sydney, NS to the late Rev. Allister and Katherine Morrison. She is survived by her husband, Brian, sons Bruce (Michele) of Oakville ON, Glenn (Philippa) of Langley BC, Gary (Laurie) of Osoyoos BC and five grandchildren Charlotte (Charley), Catherine, Griffin, Annabelle, and Finlay. Also surviving Barb is her sister Helen Fielding (David) of Vancouver BC. Predeceasing her was her brother, Harvey (Carol) of Truro NS and her sister Mary (Stan Knowles) of North River NS. Barb was part of the graduating class of 1958 in nursing at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, and practiced her profession at the Victoria General, Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Toronto General, Shaughnessy VA Hospital in Vancouver and then took time out to nurture three young sons. In 1980 she re-entered the nursing profession in psychiatry working at the alcohol treatment center at Toronto Lakeshore, the Ontario Correctional Institute in Brampton, and finally at Trillium in Mississauga, in psychiatry, then moving on to discharge planning at that facility, retiring in 2003. In addition to her devotion to her family, Barb loved Cape Breton, where she was “Barbie” to her numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Many summers were spent at her second home in Breton Cove, where she played an active role in the busy community life. She was also an active member in her gourmet club in Mississauga, where she and her girl friends even let the husbands join in occasionally. Barbara will be sorely missed by the people that knew her and most especially by her family. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter “Neweduk-Erin Mills” Chapel, 1981 Dundas St. W., Mississauga (just east of Erin Mills Pkwy) on Monday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Stephens On-the-Hill United Church, 998 Indian Rd, Mississauga, on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 2 pm. Burial will take place at a later date in Cape Breton. If desired, please consider making a contribution to Ian Anderson House, a truly caring facility in our community.
