It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Barbara Elizabeth Sarah Townshend (née Barr) on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in her home, surrounded by family.
Born on May 2, 1951, in Bessbrook, Northern Ireland, Barbara immigrated to Canada with her family in 1955. She was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Rhoda Barr. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a deeply cherished presence in the lives of all who knew and loved her. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Melissa, (Andrew), Rebecca (Alfred), Sarah (Tony), and Matthew (Olena). Cherished Grandmother of Keira, Logan and Ava. Brother Thomas (Joan); Niece Kerry (Nick), Nephew Kyle, and Great-niece Eden. She will be fondly remembered by her extended family “across the pond” in Northern Ireland and England, and her many dear friends.
Barbara’s deep devotion to family led her to step away from the workforce for twelve years to care for and raise her children, nurturing them with unwavering love and patience while instilling in them strong moral values. Upon returning to the workforce, she was determined to learn, grow, and upgrade her skills, which led her to a fulfilling career as a legal assistant. She balanced the demands of work and family with remarkable strength of character, steady devotion, and tireless commitment.
She had a love of music, instilled in her by her father, and a sense of adventure that drew her to travel and experience different cultures, art, history, and music. She made her home in the Kingsway neighbourhood, and she loved Toronto and all that it had to offer. Proud of her Irish heritage, Barbara was deeply grateful for the life she built in Canada. She was happiest in the company of family and friends, often enjoying a glass of Chardonnay while sharing stories of love and life.
Barbara will be lovingly remembered as an elegant and graceful woman whose strength, dignity, and quiet wisdom defined her life. She possessed a rare presence that brought both comfort and confidence to those around her, and she earned the admiration and respect of family and friends alike. As the cherished matriarch of her family, she was a source of love, stability, and guidance, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
Barbara will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
