Avelina Ugalde Layos Lwin

December 10, 1933 -  February 8, 2026

Born on December 10, 1933, in Canlubang, Laguna, Philippines, and died of cardiac arrest on February 8, 2026, in Mississauga, Ontario, at the age of 92.

Eldest daughter of Gerino Opina Layos (1904–1993) and Trinidad Benitez Ugalde Layos (1904–1994). Wife of Maung Sann Lwin (1939–) (m. 1968). Mother of sons Nanda Layos Lwin (1971–) and Teza Layos Lwin (1972–). Elder sister of Antonio Ugalde Layos (1935–), Rolando Ugalde Layos (1938–2025), and Corazon Ugalde Layos (1947–).

Raised in Asingan, Pangasinan, Avelina was educated in dentistry at Centro Escolar University in Manila and worked in Manila, Boston, and New York City as a pediatric dentist. She immigrated to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1964, and became a Canadian citizen in 1970. She lived in Mississauga for 52 years, from 1974 to 2026, and worked as a cytotechnologist at Mississauga Hospital from 1974 to 1996. She was a former member of the Active Adult Centre of Mississauga, the Living Arts Centre, a parishioner of St. Christopher’s Roman Catholic Church, and a resident of Parkland on the Glen.

She loved Scrabble, music, tai chi, and travelling, having visited more than 50 countries on all seven continents with her husband.

Visitation: 6 PM to 9 PM on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Turner & Porter Neweduk-Erin Mills Chapel, 1981 Dundas Street West, Mississauga.

Funeral Service and Reception: 11 AM on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at St. Christopher’s Roman Catholic Church, 1171 Clarkson Road North, Mississauga.

Burial: Following the funeral service on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Springcreek Cemetery, 1390 Clarkson Road North, Mississauga.

In keeping with her lifelong commitment to young people, the family suggests that those wishing to honour her memory consider a donation to UNICEF Canada or the Nanda Layos Lwin Civil Endowed Award for civil engineering technology students at Seneca Polytechnic.
