Audrey Byers
October 1, 1924 - August 24, 2014
We are greatly saddened by the passing of Audrey Eleanor Byers on Sunday, August 24, 2014. Audrey appeared to be comfortable on her final day after having suffered many complications from a broken arm. She was surrounded with love and prayers, and was held in the loving arms of her daughter and grandson as she slipped from us into the care of God.
Audrey was born in Toronto on October 1, 1924 to her loving parents, Henry and Ada Rapson, and welcomed by her brother Ken.
She grew to be a most remarkable person of intellect, integrity, grace, and compassion. Always guided by her personal and spiritual values, Audrey lived her life with purpose and abiding strength. She was fun-loving and happy. She openly expressed her heartfelt empathy for the heartaches and misfortunes of others.
She married the love of her life, John Byers (Jack), and was happily married for 44 years until Jack’s passing in 1988. She delighted in creating a family and nurturing her children. She was the cherished mother of Larry, Diane and Gordon.
Predeceased by her son Larry, she leaves behind her other loving children, Diane and Gord, and her very special, devoted grandson, Craig Byers (Avraham), his caring wife Yael and three great grandchildren, Chana Gittel, Chaya Rifky and Duvid Shloime.
Audrey also leaves her supportive daughters-in-law, Marie (Larry) and Nelly (Gord), and her dear, longtime family friend, Art Penny. She was blessed to have good friends and associations and valued each person who came into her life.
For almost twenty years, Audrey worked alongside her husband Jack managing the family home heating business. She later worked with the Independent Order of Foresters, and was proud of her role in insurance administration. After raising her family, Audrey pursued her love of learning and graduated from a three-year college diploma course in sociology. Her interests in finance and investments were strong and she often acted upon her interests. In her late 60s and early 70s, Audrey also became a standardbred race horse owner for a few exciting years. For about twenty years until she could no longer attend due to health challenges, she was a faithful member of a seniors’ group, aptly named Live and Learn.
In earlier years, Audrey and Jack purchased a cottage on Lake Couchiching which provided a legacy of happy memories, especially for our family and the Penny family. Audrey travelled with family and friends to many destinations in Canada, the United States and Great Britain, and also extended her vacationing to Cuba, Curacao, and the Dominican Republic. In particular, she loved the excitement and glamour offered by Las Vegas and journeyed there on seventeen occasions.
Audrey was an avid reader throughout her life. She was a knowledgeable gardener, a lover of the peaceful and beautiful aspects of nature, and an interested follower of sports such as golf, baseball, tennis, the Olympics and horse racing. Audrey had a soft spot for her large, shaggy, black and white dog, Judy. Audrey loved to laugh, dance and sing. She warmed our hearts with her smiles, her laughter and her tears.
In your honour - Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Audrey – together we acknowledge that you had a life, a wonderful, remarkable life, full of goodness and grace.
Now, at the end of the day, may your prayers for peace be answered. May you find eternal peace and everlasting life as you dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
