After a full life of ninety plus years, peacefully and with family by her side, Mom was called
home to Jesus’ heavenly kingdom on July 31, 2024. Beloved wife of the late Edward Yates after
fifty-six years of marriage. Loving mom to Melinda (Scott), Harold (Kim), Patrick (predeceased),
Derek (predeceased), and Brenda (Pablo). Cherished grandma to Christopher (Lorraine),
Michelle (Ken), Jamie (Kaetlyn), Allyson (Vlad), and Jemma (Nick). Adored great grandma to
Katie, Jack, Jayden, Cameron, and Alex.
Mom was born in a small nursing home on September 7, 1933, in Shaunavon, SK, the eldest
child of Bonna and Frank Bauer. She grew up on the family farm in Garden Head with her four
siblings, Janet, Fran, Irene, and Clarence. She often talked fondly of her Aunt Ida (Sister Bauer)
remembering “how special she made me feel in our little walks around the farm”. In 1951, Aunt
Ida helped Mom get into nursing at St. Boniface Hospital in St. Boniface, Manitoba. Before
going to study nursing, though, she met the love of her life at a dance in Stone Pile School at
the age of seventeen. Dad took one look at Mom and told his friend that he was going to marry
that girl with the big eyes and smile as “wide as a barn door”. They married two years later in
1953.
A woman of deep faith, Mom’s belief system supported her throughout her life, always and
ultimately bringing her peace. After a brief career in nursing, she devoted her life to family with
faith as a foundation. She and Dad opened their home and hearts to many – family, friends,
neighbours, exchange students – and all were welcomed with love and open arms. In her thirty-
five plus years as a parishioner at St. Dominic’s Church, Mom volunteered in various roles,
including Eucharistic Minister, serving at church dinners, and helping to prepare children for
their first communion. When she moved into her retirement home for eight years, Mom became
well-known amongst the staff and residents as a friendly, kind, and gentle soul who always
showed gratitude.
As Mom’s family, we hope to carry forward her widespread legacy of love and compassion for
everyone she knew and encountered.
In her spirit of appreciation, we, the family, would like to thank the staff at Chartwell Regency
and the palliative team at Credit Valley Hospital for their loving care.
