It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Andrew ‘Andy’ James Martinson on February 13, 2026. Andy will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Elaine (Drummond), and his adoring daughters, Lisa (John Crunkleton) and Julie. He was the proud grandfather of Audrey Crunkleton (Andrew Burney).
Born in Hamilton to James and Helen Martinson, Andy was the cherished brother of Judith Wilbourn (the late Jim), Nancy Grieve (Dave), and the late Janie Martinson. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of lifelong friends.
A graduate of McMaster University (1964-1968), Andy, also known as 'Moose', was a legendary star athlete in basketball and football. He was a long-time record holder in shot put and a standout in discus, embodying a lifelong passion for sport and competition.
Andy dedicated his life to education and mentorship. He served as a PE teacher, coach, and department head at West Humber CI, Vincent Massey CI, and as an exchange teacher at JG Althouse.
His leadership led him into administration, where he served as Vice Principal at North Albion CI, and Principal at the Metro West Detention Centre, Silverthorn CI, and Richview CI. He also contributed his expertise to the Etobicoke Board office and returned from retirement to serve as Principal of the TDSB Virtual School.
His impact on Ontario sports was unmatched:
• Awards: OPHEA Bill Paterson Award ("Outstanding PHE Teacher in Ontario"), Pete Beach Award (exceptional leadership as a teacher-coach), Province of Ontario Special Achievement Award (distinguished contribution to the field of fitness and amateur sport).
• Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association (OFSAA): Key member for 23 years, serving as Toronto Representative, Board Member, and President.
• National Leadership: President of the Canadian School Sports Association.
• Community: Event Manager for the Toronto Pan Am Games and volunteer at Peel Village Golf Club.
In retirement, Andy and Elaine explored the beauty of North America together, travelling extensively and hiking through the national parks of Canada and the United States.
