Amelia Jane Humphrey
May 25, 1928 - January 28, 2015
After a well lived life, our beloved mother, Jane (née Findlay), passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 28, 2016 with her daughters by her bedside. Cherished mother of Hope (Alex Vitkin) and Margot (Will Cook); adoring grandmother to Natasha, Isabel, Maggie and Liam. Jane was predeceased by her parents, sisters Elizabeth and Margot, and by our father, Dr. John Humphrey. Jane will be missed by her family, including her sister-in-law Jane Humphrey, nieces and nephews, Susan and Catherine Strathy, John, Jim and Robert Maedel, John and Mark Humphrey, and great nieces and nephews Amy Phair de Wilde, James Phair, Jack, Josh, Reid and Kelly Humphrey.
Jane was an independent spirit, a lover of history, and a caring friend - making life-long friends at St. Clements, Havergal, U of T and throughout her professional and personal life, including her close friends from the “Gossip Club.”
Jane graduated from U of T with a degree in sociology. Following a career as a social worker at the Children’s Aid Society in Toronto, Jane and John embarked on adventures in London and Washington DC during John’s residencies. They returned to Toronto to raise their family, settling in the St. Clair and Mt. Pleasant area. Jane had a wide circle of life-long friends, and was an active volunteer and mother.
Jane thrived volunteering at Branksome Hall, serving on the Parent-Teacher’s Association, the Sick Kids Hospital, Art Gallery of Ontario, McMichael Gallery, University College, and the U of T Panhellenic Associations. She was also an outstanding athlete, playing basketball in high school, and continuing to play badminton and tennis until she was sidelined by an injury. Jane also had her own business representing artists who made beautiful creative jewelry.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, on Thursday, February 4, 2016 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM and 7:00 – 9:00 PM.
