GIBSON, Alexander (Alex) George
passed away on February 6, 2016 in St. Joseph's Hospital, after a brief illness. Much loved father of Michelle Gibson (Jon Roberts), dear grandfather of Brodie. Elder brother to Margo Sherwood (the late Arthur Sherwood), Wayne Gibson (Patricia) and Cathy Gibson (Joe). Uncle to Shayna Sherwood and best friend to Larry Barwick. Long time partner of Helen Astley (mother of Odette Turner and Derrick Wiedel). Alex was born in Dingwall, Scotland in 1943. His parents, the late Catherine Ross and William (George) Gibson, both served in the armed forces. They brought him to Canada in 1944. In his youth, Alex was an accomplished long-distance runner. He attended Royal York Collegiate Institute, and Western Technical and Commercial School in Toronto, graduating in Applied Electronics. He attended the University of Wyoming on a track scholarship for one year and later worked as a draftsperson for Goodyear Tire before establishing himself as an art and antiques dealer. He also enjoyed photography and developing his own photos. His real passion, however, was art and antiques. Self-taught on the subject, he was a well-known art and antiques appraiser and dealer in Toronto for several decades. Alex will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Our sincere thanks to the doctors and staff at St. Joseph’s I.C.U. and Emergency Department for the excellent care that he received and compassion extended to the family.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Friday, February 12, 2016 from 6 - 9 p.m. Funeral Service on Saturday, February 13, 2016 in the Chapel at 11 a.m. For those who wish donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
